The Beginning

Lorrie and I talked for years about spending our retirement years rving around the country. In October 2010 we decided not to wait for retirement and we bought a large bumper pull travel trailer (the largest we could pull with our 1/2 ton Silverado) for weekends away by ourselves and/or with family or friends.

We were fortunate that my sister and brother in law (that sometimes went rving with us) had a barn where we could store our rv and our boat.

This was about the time Lorrie and I started talking about finding a place to build a barndominium. This would give us a place to store our rv, boat, old chevelles and a weekend place until retirement and after we retire it would be our home base when we were not on the road. (My brother in law's younger brother actually lives in barndominium on his property).

By February of 2011 we realized we did not buy a big enough travel trailer, so we traded in the Silverado and bought a GMC 3/4 diesel and a 35 ft fifth wheel bunkhouse that could sleep 9 or 10. We were spending every other weekend on the road rving, but more times than not it was only Lorrie and I as other family members often had commitment's that did not permit them to go very often.

In January 2012 we upgraded to a fully loaded 40 ft fifth wheel designed for a couple to live in and still accommodate a couple of guests, the only problem was the new rig was so big it would not fit in the barn. We rented a covered stall for the rv close by the house and stepped up our search for a place 1 acre or less, preferably within 50 miles of San Antonio, but still in the country.

We finally found a place that was just under an acre on a hill in Fischer Texas (elevation 1200 ft.) that would allow a barndominium and it is just a couple miles north of Canyon Lake and it is only about 5 minutes away from a couple of boat ramps.

After submitting our preliminary plans to the subdivision's Architectural Control Committee and getting the plans approved, we closed on the property on July 24, 2012. There are also a couple of adjoining parcels we may look at purchasing later on.
