Planning the Project
Our next step was to come up with a preliminary plan for our building. Since I have thirty plus years construction and construction management experience, our plan is to do as much of the work as we can ourselves so we can keep costs down as much as possible.
Once the preliminary plans were done it was time to solicit bids from various vendors and start putting the numbers together.
This part was long and tedious and after talking to several metal building companies with kits and five different contractors, we concluded we were not as young as we once were and needed someone else to build the shell for us and then we will finish out the inside ourselves.
We did not want something that looked just like everyother metal building so we chose to go with WD Metal Buildings www.wdmb.com , a company that has been building barndominiums for years. Both Wayne and Luke Diven were very helpful and patiently worked with us through several changes in our plans till we finally came up with what we think will work best for us now and still leave some expandability for the future.
I contracted out the concrete work myself and took bids for the foundation from various concrete contractors. (If I did not know much about concrete and/or did not want to oversee the work I would have gone with WD Metal Building's concrete contractor and let them oversee the work).
We went with Wolfe Concrete out of New Braunfels www.wolfeconcretetx.com .
The owner Glenn, and his workers were very knowlegeable, prompt and professional.
